A man in his 30s has been stabbed to death on a tram in Nottingham less than two weeks after two students and a university janitor were killed in a knife attack in the city.

Police are currently investigating the attack which happened earlier this morning (June 26), with an eyewitness describing the scene as a "bloodbath".

One man has been arrested in connection to the attack, with the identity of the victim not yet released by police.

A statement has confirmed the horrifying incident while Nottinghamshire Police appeal for possible mobile phone footage of the attack, which took place on Highbury Vale shortly after 11.10am.

An eyewitness said: "A young lad about 15 or 16 came off the tram and said a man was on the tram when he suddenly pulled a knife out of a rucksack and started waving it at people. He stabbed somebody and was going after other people.

"The lad said everybody was screaming and trying to get to the back of the tram to tell the driver to stop."

They claim they saw footage of the incident, adding the "carriage was like a blood bath" as those on board came off the vehicle looking "really shocked."

A man who allegedly stabbed the attacker was "shaking and looked in a bad way."

Chief Inspector Ash Thornton of Nottinghamshire Police said: "This investigation is in its early stages are our officers remain at the scene.

"There are no tram services between Wilkinson Street and Bulwell and also Phoenix Park while the scene remains in place. We would ask anyone who has any information or mobile phone footage to get in touch."

Tram services had been suspended at the time of the incident, with the Bulwell Phoenix Park to Wilkinson Street route affected.

Chief Constable Kate Meynell, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "What happened at Highbury Vale this morning is tragic and has resulted in the death of a man in his 30s."

Chief Constable Meynell confirmed also it was an "isolated incident."

The latest attack took place just two miles from the streets where three people were murdered on June 13.

Hockey star Grace O’Malley-Kumar, 19, was stabbed to death alongside pal Barnaby Webber, 19 as they walked home from a night out at 4am.

The pair were just five minutes from home after an end-of-term party when the knifeman - clad in all black - attacked them on Ilkeston Road.

Around an hour later, school caretaker Ian Coates, 65, was stabbed to death on Magdala Road - just streets from where Grace and Barnaby died.

Valdo Calocane, 31, of no fixed address, was charged after being arrested by police on suspicion of murder.
